Overview
My favourite shallow wreck, the Black Hawk was a U.S liberty steam ship, torpedoed by a German sub in December 1944. The ship split in two with the Stern sinking further out at a depth of 48m The bow was towed into Worbarrow and beached. Declared a total loss in April 1945. The wreck was blown up to clear the way for the Winfrith pipeline. It is badly broken up with large pieces of machinery present and lying in a rock shingle sea bed. There are large chains on her and two capstans. The broken plates provide an artificial reef for lobster, crab and large shoals of fish. A great dive for those ‘finding their fins’ in UK diving.
Great second or third dive for those new to UK diving or newly qualified.
